Post Operative Care

Why You Need Lymphatic Drainage
After Surgery

Post-surgery, Manual Lymph Drainage Massage (MLD) is essential for optimal recovery.
MLD gently pumps fluid back into the lymph vessels, which significantly reduces swelling, fluid retention, and pain.
Without MLD, inflammation may lead to complications such as fibrosis (permanent tissue hardening) or seromas (fluid pockets).
Doctors recommend MLD therapy following plastic surgery to enhance healing and achieve the best results.

What Happens After Surgery

After any surgical procedure, the body goes through several physiological processes as part of healing. Inflammation is a natural response that can cause swelling (oedema), fluid accumulation, and sometimes bruising. During this stage, tissues are fragile, mobility can be limited, and complications such as fibrosis, seromas, or adhesions may develop without proper care. Clinical post-operative support helps guide these processes safely and effectively, ensuring tissues heal correctly and evenly.

Why Clinical Lymphatic Drainage Is Essential

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, precise technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce fluid retention, minimise pain, and prevent fibrosis after surgery. It supports faster healing by improving lymphatic flow, reducing inflammation, and assisting in toxin removal. Clinical lymphatic drainage also plays an important role before surgery, helping to prepare tissues and optimise the body’s natural recovery response. Evidence-based protocols make MLD an essential part of safe and effective post-surgical recovery.

The correct post operative care will help with:

Alleviating pain

Reducing swelling and hematoma

Minimising fluid retention

Typical Protocols & Duration

Post-operative care is always personalised, but most patients benefit from 5 to 12 sessions, depending on the procedure, healing rate, and specific tissue response. Frequency and duration are adjusted after each clinical evaluation.

Pre & Post Treatment Guidelines

Pre-Treatment Care

- Arrive well-hydrated; water intake helps improve lymphatic flow and treatment effectiveness.
- Avoid applying oils, lotions, or moisturisers before the session.
- Follow your surgeon’s recommendations and report any medical restrictions.
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing for easy access to treated areas.

Post-Treatment Care – Early Phase (Days 1–14 after surgery)

- Keep the compression garment (post-surgical garment) on as recommended by your surgeon — usually 24 hours a day, removing only for hygiene and treatment sessions.
Ensure the garment fits snugly but not too tight; it should provide uniform support without pain or restricted breathing.
- Maintain good hydration — aim for 1.5 to 2 litres of water daily to flush toxins and reduce oedema.
- Avoid direct heat exposure (sunbathing, saunas) and high-impact activity.
- Do not massage or apply products unless instructed by your therapist.
- Rest in comfortable positions that do not compress treated areas.

Intermediate Phase (Weeks 3–6)

- Continue wearing the compression garment as recommended (usually daytime use).
- Gentle movement is encouraged — light walking or mobility exercises aid circulation.
- Keep the skin hydrated with fragrance-free, gentle moisturisers to support elasticity and prevent dryness.
- Avoid tight clothing that may leave marks or interfere with lymphatic flow.
- Attend regular post-operative sessions to monitor progress and adjust treatment intensity.

Late Phase (After Week 6)

- Gradually reduce the use of the compression garment following professional advice.
- Maintain hydration and balanced nutrition to sustain healing and tissue regeneration.
- Continue light self-care routines such as gentle skin massage with approved products, if advised.
- Resume normal activities progressively, avoiding overexertion until cleared by your therapist.

Alert Signs (Contact Your Therapist or Surgeon If):

-You experience unusual pain, redness, increased swelling, discharge, or localised heat.
- The garment causes discomfort, numbness, or visible skin indentation.
- There are signs of infection or excessive bruising.
